Why We Don't Charge Per Image at Our Family Studio

Why We Don't Charge Per Image at Our Family Studio

We think the 'free session, pay per image' model is broken — here's why we do things differently.

I want to talk about something that I think a lot of photography studios don't like to discuss openly: pricing. Specifically, the way a lot of studios structure their pricing, and why I think it's not great for families.

You've probably seen it before. A studio advertises a free or heavily discounted session — maybe a fiver, maybe nothing at all. It sounds brilliant. You book it, you turn up, the shoot goes well, and then you sit down to view your images. That's where things change. Suddenly you're looking at a price list where individual prints or digital files cost anywhere from £30 to £150 each. You've fallen in love with twenty photos of your kids, and now you're doing mental arithmetic while trying not to look stressed in front of the photographer. That's not a nice experience. Honestly, it's not a fair one either.

The free or low-cost session is a sales tool. The real product — the images of your own family — is locked behind a pricing structure designed to maximise what you spend in that room on that day. Some families end up spending far more than they expected, and others walk away with far fewer photos than they wanted because they felt they had to draw a line somewhere. Neither outcome sits right with me.

At Something Blue Productions, we do things differently. Our family sessions are all-inclusive. You pay one straightforward price upfront, and that covers your studio time and your images. There's no viewing appointment where you're quietly pressured into spending more. There's no moment where you have to choose between the photo where your youngest is laughing and the one where everyone is actually looking at the camera, because you can only afford one of them. You get your photographs. All of them.

I set things up this way because I think it's simply the right way to run a business. When you book a session with us — whether that's at our Papworth Everard studio or our Waterbeach studio — I want you to walk in relaxed. I want you thinking about wrangling your toddler into a reasonably cooperative mood, not about how much each smile is going to cost you. That mental freedom actually makes a real difference to how a shoot goes. Families who aren't stressed about the bill tend to enjoy themselves more, and that shows in the photographs.

It also means I can do my job properly. When I'm not working within a model that rewards me for selling you individual images at a premium, I'm entirely focused on getting the best shots I can. My incentive is to make sure you leave happy with the whole session, not to make sure you feel emotionally invested enough to spend big during a sales presentation.

I also think transparency matters. You should know what you're paying before you book, not after you've already had the shoot and your kids are already attached to their favourite photos. Hidden costs in any industry are frustrating, but in family photography they feel particularly uncomfortable because the subject matter is so personal. These are pictures of your children. The last thing you should feel is manipulated.

All-inclusive pricing isn't the most common model in portrait photography, and I'll be honest — it means we're not the cheapest option at first glance. But when you compare like for like, when you factor in what you'd actually spend under a per-image model to get a comparable set of photos, it tends to look quite different. More importantly, the experience is different. There's no sting in the tail.

If you're looking for a family photography session in Cambridgeshire and you want to know exactly what you're getting before you commit, I'd love to hear from you. You can find out more about how our family sessions work and what's included over on our families page.

Common questions

What does all-inclusive pricing actually mean for a family session?

It means you pay one set price that covers both your studio time and your final images. There's no separate viewing appointment, no per-image fees, and no upsells after the shoot. What you see on our pricing page is what you pay.

How many photos will we receive from a family session?

Because we don't charge per image, we're not putting an artificial limit on your gallery. You'll receive the best shots from your session — we don't hold images back to sell them to you individually.

Which studio should we book for our family session — Papworth Everard or Waterbeach?

Both studios are fully equipped for family shoots. It really comes down to which is more convenient for you. Papworth Everard is well-placed if you're coming from the west of Cambridge, while Waterbeach is easy to reach from the north and east. Get in touch and we can help you decide.
