There's something about Newmarket that just works for family photography. Perhaps it's the way the light catches across The Heath in the early evening, or how the ancient Devil's Dyke creates such a striking backdrop against the Suffolk sky. This isn't just any market town – it's a place where history meets countryside, and where families have plenty of room to relax and enjoy their photo session.
The Heath itself is probably our favourite spot for family shoots in Newmarket. The open grassland gives children space to run around naturally, while parents can actually relax knowing there's nowhere for little ones to disappear to. The views are stunning without being overwhelming, and the light here is consistently beautiful throughout the year. When the gorse is in bloom, it adds the most gorgeous golden backdrop you could ask for.
For families who prefer something a bit different, Devil's Dyke offers wonderful opportunities too. This ancient earthwork creates natural leading lines in photographs, and the elevated position gives us some really lovely perspectives across the surrounding countryside. It's particularly beautiful in autumn when the nearby woodlands add splashes of colour to the landscape.
The Newmarket gallops provide another unique option – nowhere else can you have horses training in the background of your family photos if that appeals to you. The early morning mist rolling across these training grounds creates an almost magical atmosphere, though we know not every family fancies a dawn start.
What we find works so well about shooting in Newmarket is the variety within a small area. We can start somewhere intimate like the quieter paths around the town edges, then move to the more dramatic open spaces of The Heath, all within a short walk. Children don't get bored, parents don't get stressed about logistics, and we get the variety we need to create a really strong collection of images.
Our nearest studio is in Waterbeach, about 25 miles away, but honestly, with landscapes like these on your doorstep, most Newmarket families choose to shoot outdoors. The Suffolk countryside here has a particular quality – it's quintessentially English without being chocolate box, and there's something about the scale of the landscape that makes families look perfectly proportioned in their environment.
We typically spend around 90 minutes together, which gives us time to explore different spots and for everyone to settle into the session naturally. The affluent, relaxed atmosphere of Newmarket tends to mean families are up for trying different locations and approaches, which always results in more interesting photographs. Plus, if we're working around the racing calendar, there's often a lovely buzz about the town that adds to the whole experience.

Questions
What time of day works best for family photography on Newmarket Heath?
Early evening is magical on The Heath, about 2 hours before sunset. The light is soft and golden, and it's usually quieter than during the day. Morning sessions work beautifully too, especially in summer when it's cooler for young children.
Is it suitable for families with very young children or babies?
Absolutely. The Heath is perfect for families with little ones – it's safe, open, and there's plenty of space for them to explore naturally. We can park very close to our shooting locations, so you don't need to worry about long walks with buggies or baby equipment.
Do you shoot during racing events or should we avoid those times?
We're happy to work around the racing calendar. Sometimes the atmosphere during race weeks adds something special to the session, but if you prefer things quieter, we can easily schedule for non-race days. Just let us know your preference when booking.
What happens if the weather isn't great on The Heath?
The open landscape of The Heath actually works well in most weather – dramatic skies can create stunning backdrops. If conditions are really challenging, we can reschedule easily, or explore some of the more sheltered spots around Devil's Dyke and the countryside paths near town.
