Family Photography St Ives Cambridgeshire | Something Blue

St Ives is one of those special Cambridgeshire market towns that feels made for family photography – with its medieval bridge, riverside meadows, and that lovely mix of historic charm and natural beauty along the Great Ouse. The town's strong family community and gorgeous outdoor spaces create the perfect backdrop for relaxed, natural family sessions.

There's something wonderfully authentic about St Ives that translates beautifully into family photographs. This isn't just another pretty town – it's a place where families actually live and play, which gives our sessions a genuine, unforced quality that you can see in the final images.

Holt Island is probably our most popular spot for St Ives family shoots, and for good reason. The island setting feels private and special, with mature trees providing natural shade and the river creating that soft, flattering light that photographers love. Children naturally gravitate towards the water's edge (safely supervised, of course), and there's enough space for everyone to spread out and relax into the session.

The riverside meadows offer a completely different feel – open, airy, and perfect for families who want that classic English countryside look. The walking paths mean we can easily move between different spots during your session, and the views back towards the town create some lovely contextual shots that really place your family in St Ives.

For something more architecturally interesting, the medieval town bridge is genuinely photogenic without being overly touristy. The stonework provides beautiful texture, and the bridge spans give us natural framing opportunities. It works particularly well for multi-generational shoots where you want something that speaks to the area's history.

The Hemingford Grey meadows, just a short walk from the main town, offer even more space and privacy. These spots work brilliantly for families with very young children who need room to roam, or for larger extended family groups who want multiple setup options within walking distance.

Our nearest studio is in Papworth Everard, about twenty miles away, but honestly, with locations this good in St Ives itself, most families prefer to stay outdoors. The natural light here is consistently beautiful, especially in the golden hours, and there's something about being in familiar surroundings that helps everyone – particularly children – feel more comfortable in front of the camera.

What you can expect from a St Ives family session is variety without rushing. We typically spend about 90 minutes together, which gives us time to try different spots and let natural interactions develop. The town's compact size means we're never far from car parks or facilities, but once we're shooting, you'll feel like you have these beautiful spaces to yourselves.

The combination of water, greenery, historic features, and genuine Cambridgeshire character makes St Ives ideal for families who want photographs that feel both polished and authentic – images that look like you, in a place that matters to you.
