There's something special about Cambridge that makes it perfect for family photography. The mix of ancient architecture, green spaces, and riverside paths gives us endless options whether you're after something classic or more contemporary.

The Backs remain our most popular location, and for good reason. The sweeping lawns of King's College and Trinity College create a timeless backdrop, while the River Cam adds movement and light to your images. We often start here for the formal shots then wander towards the meadows for something more relaxed.

Grantchester Meadows is where families really come alive in front of the camera. Kids can run freely while we capture those genuine interactions between you all. The wildflower meadows in late spring and summer are particularly stunning, and there's space for everyone to spread out and be themselves.

For families with younger children, Cherry Hinton Hall offers the perfect compromise. The formal gardens provide structure for group shots, while the playground areas give little ones something to focus on. We've found this works brilliantly for families who want beautiful photos but need to keep restless toddlers engaged.

Midsummer Common and Parker's Piece give us those wonderful open Cambridge skies. These spaces work particularly well for larger family groups or when you want that sense of freedom and space in your images. The light here is gorgeous during golden hour, creating that warm glow that makes everyone look their best.

Our approach is simple: we want you to enjoy the experience. Cambridge families are wonderfully diverse, from long-established locals to international academics who've made this city home. Whatever your story, we'll make sure your photos reflect who you are as a family, not just how you think you should look.

We're based at our Waterbeach studio, just five miles from central Cambridge, which means we can easily scout locations beforehand and know exactly where to find the best light at different times of year. We'll handle all the logistics so you can focus on enjoying time together.

Every family session includes a pre-shoot consultation where we'll discuss your preferred locations and style. We usually recommend allowing two hours for shooting, which gives us time to move between spots and lets everyone relax into the process. You'll receive your edited gallery within two weeks, with options for prints and albums if you'd like something tangible to treasure.

Questions

Family Photography in Cambridge — FAQs

What are the best times of year for family photos in Cambridge?

Late spring through early autumn works beautifully, with May to September being ideal. The meadows are at their best in late spring, while autumn brings gorgeous colours to the college grounds. We shoot year-round though - winter light along The Backs can be particularly atmospheric.

How long does a family photography session take?

We typically allow two hours for family sessions, which gives us time to visit multiple locations and ensures everyone stays relaxed. With young children, we sometimes work more quickly but still get plenty of variety.

Can we include our dog in the family photos?

Absolutely! Cambridge's green spaces are perfect for including four-legged family members. Grantchester Meadows and Midsummer Common are particularly good for this as dogs can be off-lead in designated areas.

Do you have backup plans for bad weather?

Yes, we can move sessions to our Waterbeach studio if needed, or reschedule for better conditions. Some of Cambridge's covered areas like college cloisters can also work well for shelter while maintaining that historic atmosphere.
